ESC Update - December 2016

After a fantastic year for Natalie it was time to wrap it up with a trip to Bahrain and take on some of the best athletes in the world for the 70.3. The race proved the improvements she has made all year and with the exception of a dodgy stomach on the run, the performance was clinical and on plan. It just goes to show how far Natalie has come with solid progression in training; high quality, dedicated recovery and a steady head to think through the race. On paper the final result may look a little disappointing but we all know it's just a small hurdle and that actually the result is very exciting for what is to come in 2017.

Elsewhere Ollie Holman kept himself busy through winter training with a few cross country races just to maintain some fun through the winter months.

TESW Academy enjoyed a high quality training weekend based in South Wales. This meant the athletes were able to join up with the Welsh Academy and practise their hand at track cycling as well as covering swimming and running. It was great to join up with another academy not only for the athletes to test themselves against each other but also for the coaches to discuss ideas about how academies can work effectively. So a big thank you to those in Wales that made this weekend happen.

It was also the time of year when the English Talent Squad (ETS) head of for a week of warmer (but not always dry!) weather training. I was fortunate enough to be invited along to help out in Portugal. The camps are busy however, it is always good to be surrounded by a team of high quality coaches and practitioners who put together a full and supportive programme for the athletes. I always learn a lot on these weeks and this year was no different with the biggest take away for me being around the ability of athletes to accept that not every session on the plan needs to be done if it is not right for them at the time. Advice can be sort, adjustments can be made and it all makes for a quality week of training covering exactly what the athlete's need and are capable of doing at that time.

Blog of the month: Tri and think.
