ESC Update - March 2017

Everyone needs a holiday and it was great to be able to take a week away at the beginning of the month into the mountains and to do a bit of cross-country skiing and mountain biking. It's important for me to keep challenging myself in different ways and to learn new skills and skate skiing is certainly a challenge for me, especially because I never spent any time on snow when growing up. Lots more to learn and I look forward to going back for more.

The main event for Paratriathlon this month was a week long camp where selected athletes were asked to return to Loughborough for a week of training alongside the current talent squad and the performance squad. There are plenty of challenges during the week; not least from the weather, which meant we had to adjust our plans and from the coaches who like springing surprises such as time trials. I'm pleased to report that the athletes responded very well including a few PB's to demonstrate that plenty of learning and training is occuring in their home environments.

The regional academy had their last weekend in Burnham for the winter (one more to come on the south coast in May) and the training revolved around preparation for the annual national performance assessments the following week. Learning was heavily centred around the obtaining a suitable mental approach for the performance assessments and having appropriate strategies ready whatever the the outcome of the first day (swim) and being ready for the second day (bike/run). It was also great to welcome Annie Vernon (former GB Rower and multiple medalist) who gave a talk to the athletes about her approach to sport and life as she was growing up. These perspectives are incredibly important for developing athletes. Not only are the inspiring but Annie was also able to provide a number of useful tips and strategies on how to approach and balance performance sport as a young athlete.

Elsewhere, ESC athletes were continuing to show the positive effects of their winter training. Natalie Seymour put in a very strong half-marathon performance in Richmond and Maria Powell is thoroughly enjoying bike racing with her team. Plenty of learning going on, with everyone continuing to move forwards.

Youtube of the month Growth Maturation . A great little video from Sport Scotland to help understand how the process of maturation affects sporting ability.
