ESC Update - April 2017

Racing really started to step up in April with plenty of half-marathons, duathlons and even a sneaky little triathlon.

Louisa Vere enjoyed Berlin half marathon with a sub 1:30 PB performance showing that winter training was progressing well; Natalie Seymour completed the twisty Richmond Park half-marathon in a time that was again pushing closer to that 1:20 barrier. Ollie Holman braved the Woking triathlon, Maria Powell pushed on with her Bike-Science road-racing team and James Travers had a strong performance in the Vale of Glamorgan Duathlon. So mostly 'fun' racing but all with a purpose for later in the season.

Academy athletes had a busy few weeks competing in the National Duathlon Championships on a very windy and open Bedford Aerodrome. It meant a bit of a struggle for the lighter, less powerful junior girls and demonstrates that a bit more time on the bike, strengthening the legs would be useful. For the junior males, Ben Jones produced a good result finishing 5th. Although my role with British Paratriathlon has now ended it was still good to see the Paraduathlon race at the end of the day which had one of the closest finishes of all the races; Jade Jones squeezing around Karen Darke on the last corner to take the win. The future of Paratriathlon in Great Britain is certainly strong!

Quickly after the duathlon champs came the performance assessment weekend. This is an annual event for all youth and junior athletes in the country and helps set the roll down list for superseries races. Run as a pool swim TT on day one and a staggered start bike/run on day two; athletes have the opportunity to see how winter training has been going and set the bar for the competitions to come. There were a number of great performances from the South West Academy athletes with the junior girls standing out with several top 10 finishes.

Finally, I had the last 2-day workshop of my Sports Coach UK Aspire course with plenty of discussion around athletes transitioning from one level of performance to another. Examples came from British Rowing and British Judo allowing us to consider different ways of managing athletes not just growing in size but in their performance levels too. A very worthwhile couple of days.
