Bristol University Triathlon Club at BUCS Sprint Triathlon 2018

Bristol University Triathlon Club at BUCS Sprint Triathlon

I absolutely love working with Bristol University. So few of them arrive at the university with a background in triathlon however, they come along every week, get stuck in, work hard, accept feedback, smile, laugh, have fun and improve. It’s everything you would want from a university triathlon club.

BUCS sprint triathlon is their main event of the year and this year 27 athletes went along with an attitude of doing everything they could to finish as high as possible and to enjoy the experience. Year on year the university has improved in the team event and this year was no exception. The men’s team finished 5thhowever, with two teams from Leeds Beckett university above them they will pick up BUCS points for 4thplace; the fastest Bristol University female team finished 7th. Outstanding results considering their triathlon training history (or lack of it).

The club currently has very little support from the university itself and has provided pretty much everything this year off it’s own back. It has access to a 25m pool for an hour three times a week, a spin session once a week and the rest of the sessions are fitted in where and when they can be, the environment is then completed by the students themselves. Their results therefore are testament to those who run and actively participate in the club. It is hoped that the results they have been getting will lead to an increase in support from the university however, it shows it can be done without the support if necessary.

Keep up the good work team!!

UPDATE - 16/5/18: Thanks to the tireless hard work of Hugh, the committee and the athletes in the club, the University has awarded the club 'Kick-starter' status. It's the middle level of three in their performance sport structure which should see extra support for next year. This will allow the club to continue to grow and develop what it has on offer. Thanks to the University Sports Performance Team for seeing and supporting the potential.
