ESC Update - June 2017

The beginning of June saw a busy month for Louise Vere first with the Challenge Championship event in Slovakia; quickly followed by the European Age-group Championships in Kitzbühel and then by Ironman Austria two weeks later. Whilst not a recommended pathway through a series of races it was a challenge that we planned for and strong results were seen in all races. A fast flat course in hot weather created conditions which produced a PB over a middle distance and the quick trip out to Austria proved a good sharpener for what was to follow however, Ironman Austria was in July so more of that next month. Ollie Holman put in his first performance of the year over the course at Thorpe Park, he'll return later in the summer to see if he can better his time and at the end of the month put in a strong performance at Llandudno triathlon over what can be best described as a hilly bike course. Jon Waring joined him Llandudno and put in a great performance to show he has continued to improve and is getting stronger as the season progresses. Bristol Harbourside Triathlon proved a good day out for Maria Powell (Sprint Distance) and Colin Porter (Standard Distance) whilst James Travers completed his final preparation event before travelling to the Island Games in Gotland to compete for Jersey. Matthew Swan started working with me about 8 weeks ago when the idea of completing Staffordshire 70.3 went from being an idea to something that needed to be taken seriously. As someone who has a busy job, three young children and triathlon as a hobby things need to be carefully balanced and limited training hours planned in where possible. I'm very pleased to say that despite the heat and short lead in Matthew completed the event in a very respectable 5:45 and for someone was wasn't able to swim front crawl 8 weeks ago, this is a great step forward. Onwards now to beat 10Km, half-marathon PB's and complete the Marathon Des Sables next year!

Maria Powell and Natalie Seymour both had very good races in June. Maria in the European Sprint Distance Championships finishing second in her age-group and after a long period of injury and rehab her persistence and patience have seen her start to get right back into the swing of things in triathlon and the running is slowly coming back to where we know it can be; there is still more to come here. Having qualified for the World Championships, Natalie took the brave decision to switch races from Staffordshire 70.3 and instead travel out to the European 70.3 Championships in Elsinore rather than race at Staffordshire. The quality of field here was a marked step up but the decision to go was deliberate; to create a greater challenge An opportunity to race the best and continue to learn about tactics when chasing a race. There were certainly a lot of lessons learned here and these will become valuable later in the year.

The youth and junior superseries continued with Blenheim Triathlon. This was also a qualifying race for the European Youth Championships next month. Whilst the non-wetsuit swim was a bit of a surprise the South West still managed to have one athlete qualify and saw some promising performances from the younger athletes. There is certainly more to come from this group; it's going to be an exciting summer!
